After an early breakfast drive for around 7 Hrs to Pangong Lake. Located
at an altitude of 14,000 ft, Pangong Lake is approached by a road that crosses
the Chang La Pass (18,000 ft.) and scenic villages.
The spectacular lakeside is open during the tourist season, from May to September.
A special permit is required to visit the lake. While Indian nationals can
obtain individual permits, others must have group permits (with a minimum
of four persons) accompanied by an accredited guide; the tourist office in
Leh issues the permits for a small fee. For security reasons, India does not
permit boating. There is a 7 room J&K Tourism Guest House which also houses
a campsite, at Spangmik, the only village on the banks of lake. Most of its
inhabitants herd sheep and goats and have quite recently given up nomadic
ways. A significant temple stands below the peaks overlooking the village
and the lake.
The Lake freezes completely during the winter season. In fact its even said
that the border security forces stationed around the lake use the frozen surface
as roads for a bit of adventure during the slack and laid back winters.
Stay overnight at a camp on the edge of Pangong Lake.

Likir Gompa. The Buddhist heritage of Ladakh can be seen at these religious
sites.
Likir Gompa: Founded in the 11th century and rededicated to a different monastic
order in the 15th century, its earlier Gompa was destroyed in a fire. The
present Gompa dated back to the 18th century. Skilled craftsmen producing
excellent Thankas, earthen pots and carved wooden folding stools, live here
in the village. Majestically situated, Likir commands a spectacular view.
A magnificent giant Jupiter tree, one of the few survivors of its species,
stands in the courtyard.
Alchi Gompa: 70 Kms from Leh, on the banks of the Indus, is the Alchi Gompa
dating a thousand years back. One of its walls features thousands of miniature
sized pictures of the Buddha. Three large sized images made of clay and painted
brightly are its focal attractions. No longer an active religious center,
it is looked after by monks from the Liker monastery. This is the only monastery
amongst 34 monasteries, which is not located on a hilltop.
In the evening return back to your hotel for an overnight stay.
