Welcome to Vardhman's "Ladakh Monastery Trek"!
On arrival in Leh, you will be met and transferred by Vardhman's representative
to your hotel. Full day rest to acclimatize yourself. Evening go for a brisk
walk to stretch your body.
Overnight: Hotel
Day 2: Leh
Morning after breakfast porceed for the tour of Leh City, including the
17th century palace and gompa.
Shanti Stupa (Japanese Peace Pagoda) : Shanti Stupa/Japanese peace pagoda
is build by a Japanese religious organization headed by Head monk Nakamura
with the help from the organization and local people. It is situated at a
hill top in Cahngspa village providing a bird eye view of the Leh town and
the surrounding mountain peaks. Architecturally it has the Japanese touch
with small clean rooms on the side for mediators and the main Japanese shrine
at the entrance.
Sankar Gompa & Village : A relatively modern monastery, it is closely
associated with the Spituk monastery and served as the residence of the late
head priest-Kushak Bakula. A number of gold icons are to be found here.

Day 3 - 4: Leh
Next two days is free to explore the monasteries and palaces of the Indus
valley.
Hemis Gompa: It contains a number of gold statues and Stupas decorated with
precious stones and a superb collection of Thankas, including one that is
the largest in existence. Hemis gompa is believed to have been established
in 1630 by Lama Tagstang Raspa and built by Palden Sara under the patronage
of King Sengge Namgyal on a site previously sanctified by the construction
of a cave hermitage dating from the 12th century. This monastery is the oldest
one in the area belonging to the Kargyu school. The Gompa is a unique example
of a monastic complex of this period which manifests in its structure the
geomantic principles which underlie religious constructions of this type.
Thiksey Gompa : 19 Kms from Leh, spectacularly sited, Thiksey is one of the
largest and architecturally most impressive Gompas. There are several temples
in this Gompas, containing images, stupas and wall paintings of Buddha, which
are exquisite.
Shey Palace And Gompa : Shey palace with its remarkable statue of Buddha and
panoramic views of Indus valley. Situated on a hillock 15 Kms upstream from
Leh, it was once the residence of the royal family. According to tradition,
it was the seat of power of the pre-Tibetan kinds. A 7.5 mts high copper statue
of Buddha, plated with gold and the largest of its kind, is installed here.
Phiyang Gompa : 17 Kms from Leh on the Leh-Kargil road, it looks like a huge
palace from afar, build by Tashi Namgyal in the later half of the 16th century
AD, it belongs to the Red Cap sect of Buddhists. Hundreds of icon of Buddha
and other gods are kept on wooden shelves.
Continue drive towards Alchi monastery, famous for its massive statues of
Buddha, its wood carving and Cashmere wall paintings.
Stok Palace & Museum : The palace of the banished royal family, Stok has
a museum which displays fabulous period costumes and jewelry of the royalty
along with exquisite Thankas representing the life style of Shakya Muni. Interesting
historical objects like coins, armor, weapons, precious jades and porcelain
too can be seen here.
Spituk Monastery: The Spituk Monastery of Ladakh is situated at a distance
of approximately 8 km from the town of Leh. Towering over a conical, the 3-chapel
monastery dates back to the 11th century, when it was founded century by Od-de,
the elder brother of Lha Lama Changchub Od. He was the one to introduce a
monastic community here. When a translator, Rinchen Zangpo, came to this place,
he said that an exemplary religious community would develop there. This statement
led to the naming of the monastery as Spituk, meaning Exemplary.

Day 5: Leh-Lamayuru
This morning after a leisurely breakfast drive to the 11th century monastery
Lamayuru. Arrive and chek into your camp. Visit Lamayuru monastery and stay
overnight in your camp.
Lamayuru: Situated on a drained lake the monastery at Lamayuru is known for
its scenic beauty. The monastery is the oldest in Ladakh, dating before the
10th Century, and is built on a sacred Bon (the pre-Buddhist religion) site.
Lamayuru used to be an asylum for criminals, though not any longer! is situated
at a distance of approximately 127 km to the west of Leh. The legend associated
with this monastery goes that at the time of Sakyamuni (the Historical Buddha),
nags (holy serpents) used to live in a Lake at the present day Lamayuru's
valley. It was the prediction of the Bodhisattva Madhyantaka that the lake
would get drained out, making the place for the construction of a monastery.
It is further believed that in 11th century, Mahasiddhacharya Naropa, Indian
Buddhist scholar, meditated for many years in a cave in Dukhang, still seen
today.

Day 6: Lamayuru-Prinkiti La-Wanlah
On the day 6 of your tour begin your trek to Wanlah. Cross a stream, climb
across mountain-side onto a small valley, reach Prinkiti-la(3720M). Descend
a gorge, arrive at Shilla, cross a bridge, continue to the right bank upto
Wanla (2 1/2 hours),where there is a beautiful ancient gompa. Chek into your
camp for an overnight rest.

Day 7: Wanlah-Hinju
Continue through awesome gorge country to pastures beyond the village
of Hinju. Now follow Yapola river on the left for 2 hours upto Panji-la after
crossing the bridge. Go up the valley, leading off at right angles (north-east),
after one hour's trekking leave the valley on the left then to Hinju-one hour.Overnight:

Day 8: Hinju- Konzke-la(4950M)-Sumda
On the day 8 of your tour cross the 4900 metre Konzke La for a spectacular
view before descending to pastures just above the village of Sumda Chenmo.
From the summit of Konzke-la(4950M), long descent to pastures, follow the
trial on the left bank along the mountainside.
Reach Sumda and check into your camp for an overnight stay.

Day 9: Sumda
Pass through Sumda Chenmo, which actually has two gompas: One is active, while
the other lies in ruins below the village.

Day 10: Sumda
Rest day, with an optional side trip to Sumda Choon, whose ancient and
rarely visited gompa houses remarkable artistic treasures.

Day 11: Sumda-Lanak
Continue upwards to the beautiful meadow of Lanak. In the evenings, we
have often spotted Bharal, the rare and elusive blue sheep, on the nearby
cliffs.

Day 12: Lanak-Dundunchen La-Chiling-Alchi
Today's climb to Dundunchen La (4800 metres) is strenuous, a stunning
view encompassing the Stok and Zanskar ranges. Finish our trek with a long
descent into Chiling, before boarding the rafts on the Zanskar river. Ride
the river to its confluence with the Indus at Nimu, then board jeeps for the
trip to Alchi. Upon arrival, check into your hotel for an overnight rest.

Day 13: Alchi-Leh
Full day free to visit Alchi, tour the remarkably well-preserved 11th
-century gompa and the famed frescoes within.
Alchi Gompa : 70 Kms from Leh, on the banks of the Indus, is the Alchi Gompa
dating a thousand years back. One of its walls features thousands of miniature
sized pictures of the Buddha. Three large sized images made of clay and painted
brightly are its focal attractions. No longer an active religious center,
it is looked after by monks from the Liker monastery. This is the only monastery
amongst 34 monasteries, which is not located on a hilltop.
Likir Gompa : Founded in the 11th century and rededicated to a different monastic
order in the 15th century, its earlier Gompa was destroyed in a fire. The
present Gompa dated back to the 18th century. Skilled craftsmen producing
excellent Thankas, earthen pots and carved wooden folding stools, live here
in the village. Majestically situated, Likir commands a spectacular view.
A magnificent giant Jupiter tree, one of the few survivors of its species,
stands in the courtyard.
In the afternoon drive back to Leh. Upon arrival, check into hotel for an
overnight rest

Day 14: Leh
Full day free for relax, go shopping, in the evening see cultural show
of Ladakhi songs and dances.

Day 15: Leh-Delhi
In the morning transfer to Leh airport to board flight for Delhi. On arrival
you will be met and transferred by our representataive to your hotel. Relax
for a while and then proceed to explore the City.
Visit Qutab Minar, Humayun's tomb, Lakshminarayan Temple, a modern Hindu Temple,
Parliament House, Government Secretarial Building and Connaught place, the
shopping centre of New Delhi.
Visit Red Fort, built in 1648 by Mughal Emperor Shahjehan, Jama Masjid, one
of the largest Mosque of India, Raj Ghat and Shanti Vana, the cremation sites
of Mahatama Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. Also drive past Chandni Chowk, shopping
centre of Old Delhi.

Day 16: Delhi
This morning after a leisurely breakfast transfer to Delhi International
airport to board the flight for your onward journey to back home with sweet
and pleasant memories of your "Ladakh Monastery Trek" escorted by
Vardhman Vacations.
