Welcome to Vardhman's "The Classic Markha Valley"!
On arrival in Leh, you will be met and transferred by Vardhman's representative
to your hotel. Full day rest to acclimatize yourself. Evening go for a brisk
walk to stretch your body.

Day 2: Leh
Tour of Leh city, including the seventeenth century Palace and Gompa.
Shanti Stupa (Japanese Peace Pagoda) : Shanti Stupa/Japanese peace pagoda
is build by a Japanese religious organization headed by Head monk Nakamura
with the help from the organization and local people. It is situated at a
hill top in Cahngspa village providing a bird eye view of the Leh town and
the surrounding mountain peaks. Architecturally it has the Japanese touch
with small clean rooms on the side for mediators and the main Japanese shrine
at the entrance.
Sankar Gompa & Village : A relatively modern monastery, it is closely
associated with the Spituk monastery and served as the residence of the late
head priest-Kushak Bakula. A number of gold icons are to be found here.

Day 3: Leh
Today Explore Spituk and Phyang gompas. Later in the evening drive back
to Leh for an overnight stay.
Spituk Monastery: The Spituk Monastery of Ladakh is situated at a distance
of approximately 8 km from the town of Leh. Towering over a conical, the 3-chapel
monastery dates back to the 11th century, when it was founded century by Od-de,
the elder brother of Lha Lama Changchub Od. He was the one to introduce a
monastic community here. When a translator, Rinchen Zangpo, came to this place,
he said that an exemplary religious community would develop there. This statement
led to the naming of the monastery as Spituk, meaning Exemplary.
Phiyang Gompa : 17 Kms from Leh on the Leh-Kargil road, it looks like a huge
palace from afar, build by Tashi Namgyal in the later half of the 16th century
AD, it belongs to the Red Cap sect of Buddhists. Hundreds of icon of Buddha
and other gods are kept on wooden shelves.

Day 4: Leh
On the day 4 of your tour visit Shey and Matho gompas and Stok palace,
the home of Ladakhi royalty.
Shey Palace And Gompa : Shey palace with its remarkable statue of Buddha and panoramic views of Indus valley. Situated on a hillock 15 Kms upstream from Leh, it was once the residence of the royal family. According to tradition, it was the seat of power of the pre-Tibetan kinds. A 7.5 mts high copper statue of Buddha, plated with gold and the largest of its kind, is installed here.
Stok Palace & Museum : The palace of the banished royal family, Stok
has a museum which displays fabulous period costumes and jewelry of the royalty
along with exquisite Thankas representing the life style of Shakya Muni. Interesting
historical objects like coins, armor, weapons, precious jades and porcelain
too can be seen here.
Matho Monastery: situated on the opposite bank of the Indus across Thiksey,
Matho was established in the first half of the 16th century AD and has valuable
collection of very old and beautiful Thankhas, some in the form of Mandalas.
Its annual festival of Oracles in early march is an important event in Ladakhi
religious calendar.
Later in the evening drive back to leh for overnight rest in the hotel.

Day 5: Leh-Hemis
In the morning explore Thiksey and Hemis gompas, two the wealthiest and
most influential institutions in Ladakh.
Thiksey Gompa : 19 Kms from Leh, spectacularly sited, Thiksey is one of the
largest and architecturally most impressive Gompas. There are several temples
in this Gompas, containing images, stupas and wall paintings of Buddha, which
are exquisite.
Hemis Gompa: It contains a number of gold statues and Stupas decorated with
precious stones and a superb collection of Thankas, including one that is
the largest in existence. Hemis gompa is believed to have been established
in 1630 by Lama Tagstang Raspa and built by Palden Sara under the patronage
of King Sengge Namgyal on a site previously sanctified by the construction
of a cave hermitage dating from the 12th century. This monastery is the oldest
one in the area belonging to the Kargyu school. The Gompa is a unique example
of a monastic complex of this period which manifests in its structure the
geomantic principles which underlie religious constructions of this type.
Reach Hemis and check into your camp for an overnight rest.

Day 6: Hemis-Chogdo
Today start trek from Hemis to the village of Chogdo. Stay overnight in
camp.

Day 7: Chogdo-Kongmaru La
Trek to Kongmaru La base camp.
Trek uphill for about three hours to reach the small campsite at the Base
of Kongmaru La Pass (4800 Mts.). This place is frequented by Blue Sheep/Bharal
and good photographs of them are possible for early risers.
Overnight: Camp
Day 8: Kongmaru La
Full day free for acclimatization.
Overnight: Camp
Day 9: Base Camp - Kongmaru La - Nimaling (5 hr.)
Leave early morning and tackle the stiff but short climb to the top of the
Pass Kongmaru La (5150 Mts.). From the Pass there are beautiful views of Mt
Kangyaze (6400 Mts.) which stands above the meadows of Nimaling. There is
a short and gradual descent till the meadows of Nimaling (4650 Mts.). Overnight
stay at your camp.
Overnight: Camp
Day 10: Nimaling-Markha
Trek through the tiny settlements of Hankar and Umlung to the valley's largest
village, Markha.
Overnight: Camp
Day 11: Markha-Tunespa
Trek to the lovely oasis at Tunespa.
Overnight: Camp
Day 12: Tunespa-Skiu
Trek to the village of Skiu, with its medireview gompa.
A very pleasant walk up one of the loveliest sections of the valley, with
thick bushes along the river, which is spanned by several bridges. Camp is
set at Skiu.
Overnight: Camp
Day 13: Skiu-Zanskar-Alchi
Trek to Zanskar river. Take the pulley bridge across before boarding the
rafts on the Zanskar river. Ride the river to its confluence with the Indus
at Nimu. Then from here drive to reach Alchi. Overnight stay will be in the
hotel.

Day 14: Alchi-Leh
In Alchi tour the remarkably well preserved 11th -century gompa and the
famed frescoes within.
Alchi Gompa : 70 Kms from Leh, on the banks of the Indus, is the Alchi Gompa
dating a thousand years back. One of its walls features thousands of miniature
sized pictures of the Buddha. Three large sized images made of clay and painted
brightly are its focal attractions. No longer an active religious center,
it is looked after by monks from the Liker monastery. This is the only monastery
amongst 34 monasteries, which is not located on a hilltop.
In the afternoon drive back to Leh. Upon arrival, check into your hotel for
an overnight stay.

Day 15: Leh
This morning after a lesiurely breakfast drive back to Leh. Upon arrival,
check into your hotel. Rest of the day free for relax, go shopping, in the
evening see cultural show of Ladakhi songs and dances.

Day 16: Leh-Delhi
In the morning transfer to Leh airport to board flight for Delhi. On arrival
you will be met and transferred by our representataive to your hotel. Relax
for a while and then proceed to explore the City.
Visit Qutab Minar, Humayun's tomb, Lakshminarayan Temple, a modern Hindu Temple,
Parliament House, Government Secretarial Building and Connaught place, the
shopping centre of New Delhi.
Visit Red Fort, built in 1648 by Mughal Emperor Shahjehan, Jama Masjid, one
of the largest Mosque of India, Raj Ghat and Shanti Vana, the cremation sites
of Mahatama Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. Also drive past Chandni Chowk, shopping
centre of Old Delhi.
Overnight: Hotel
Day 17: Delhi
This morning after a leisurely breakfast transfer to Delhi International
airport to board the flight for your onward journey to back home with sweet
and pleasant memories of your "The Classic Markha Valley" escorted
by Vardhman Vacations.
